Abstract

The Teacher Training College can extend its mission beyond initial teacher education to support teachers throughout their professional lives. The Mexican teacher-training system faces a paradox: enrollment is growing, while graduation rates and available teaching positions are advancing at a different pace; at the same time, upper secondary education includes hundreds of thousands of teachers who entered the classroom without prior pedagogical preparation. Against this backdrop, the microcredential functions as a stackable curricular unit that, together with the recognition of prior learning, can articulate pathways toward a postgraduate degree, since an isolated unit offers limited value compared with a well-structured sequence. The proposal addresses concerns about the market-driven fragmentation of the curriculum and argues that educational coherence emerges from the institution’s collegial work. Three conditions define its scope: transparency across units, free access for in-service teachers, and the portability of recognition.
