Abstract
During the nineteenth century, normal school education gradually took shape as a space where political interests, educational projects, and teacher-training practices converged. In this process, normal schools operated as mechanisms for organizing public education and for defining who was authorized to teach, under what criteria, and with what preparation. This essay examines the historical formation of normal school education in Mexico within this framework, with particular attention to the State of Mexico, a region that early on concentrated a considerable number of teacher-training institutions. The study focuses on the period following independence and extends to the late nineteenth century, when normal school education became established as a formative reference. Through the analysis of primary and secondary documentary sources, the paper reconstructs institutional processes, pedagogical debates, and governmental decisions that shaped normalismo and an educational tradition with a strong presence at the state level.
